First, but not the last!
Today is the day when a lady was elected for the first time as
the vice president of the USA. That too
a lady of color. Listening to her makes me wonder how hard it was for her mom,
single mom, to raise kids in America when civil rights movements were gaining
momentum and women didn’t have the right to vote. A country where millions of black women
are still trying to make their voice
heard, a country where women still fight
to have equal wages and a country where native American women are still
struggling for a livelihood in spite of deep knowledge in various subjects I
wonder how hard it would have been for Ms Harris to achieve this position by
breaking the barriers.
This election also made history: a transgender woman and a gay man also got
elected for the first time. A black was elected to Congress for the first time
in Georgia.
What took us so long to break the barriers? Are we not
educated enough, tough enough to hold the position? Was it the lack of motivation or the courage
that imprisoned us in breaking this barrier?
If so, we wouldn’t have had the first lady doctor, first lady pilot,
first lady scientist.
Freedom: to be able to break free from whatever is
constraining us needs courage, determination, knowledge and motivation. Courage
to see right from wrong, determination to pursue what we believe is right,
knowledge to sail through when in doubts and the motivation to go one step
further than our predecessors are what we need to break all the ceilings.
So, to all our daughters: Be fearless! Barriers are in our minds. Once we learn to
break them, we are no longer labeled. Would you have believed if we said there
was a time when women were not allowed to go to school, were not granted the
right to vote, were not granted the right to wear pants, were not granted to
run a marathon or any other sport, were
not granted the right to choose a partner or to separate from one? Each of these barriers are broken and we have
more to break. Be one and certainly
don’t be the only one in any.
